Going Green

So a few months ago Jason and I decided to try to make our lives a little greener. Since that time we have sold one of our cars (the gas guzzler)and bought bikes and a trailer, we are trying to use reusable grocery bags, and switched away from using bottled water everywhere we go. We found these cool Nalgene bottles (reusable plastic bottles)that have been awesome for us. The big problem with them has been that Daniel has been fascinated with them. He has almost perfected dumping huge amounts of water on his face while trying to drink from my bottle which is pretty impressive to watch. So today, we went up to REI to get some more biking stuff and saw that Nalgene makes a toddler water bottle. Imagine, I thought to myself, would I really add another sippy cup to Daniel's infinite collection? The answer was easy when I saw his reaction to the bottle I was holding in my hand, euphoria. He got to pick out his color bottle, he picked blue just like mine, and carried it up almost the whole way to the cash register like a big boy. Like many people he got distracted by the other side of the store as we entered the line. So now Daniel has his own little "green" cup, which really saves me from having to rescue my bottle from his little hands twenty times a day. As soon as we walked in the door he went right to the shopping bag and brought his bottle to me. How he even knows that stuff comes home in a bag is unbelievable. Kids are so observant. After two hours Daniel has drained the bottle which holds 12 oz. which is awesome since he usually takes all day to drink that much water.

About going green. I have read news articles saying that people are driving less and bike sales have skyrocketed this year. I have seen farmers markets exploding with people and tons of people that bike there and no one has a plastic bag in sight. But going green is really expensive up front. Buying a bike was not as easy at it seemed. Since we sold our SUV we had to buy a bike rack for the Subaru which decided to take off some of our letters so it looks like we drive a Subar. Then there were the helmets for all three of us, work out clothes, a bike pump, bike maintenance costs, the trailer for Daniel and all these other weird little things. Needless to say it was more expensive than just the bike itself. Yet aside from the fact that we are trying to help the environment, our family has already seen benefits of going green. Daniel loves going for bike rides tons more than he loves being stuck in the car. Jason and I have been helping local farmers and craftswomen by buying all sorts of stuff that we need and don't need at the farmers market. We are exercising more since we can do it together as a family. And our garden gave us the first ripe tomatoes of the summer. So even if my family driving less and using fewer plastic bags and bottles won't necessarily save the world, at least we have found things that we all like to enjoy doing together.

Ikea beat the rainy day

My kids love the dirt. They love being outside while I try to plant and do everything in the dirt. Alice rolls in, runs in, and eats the dirt. The grossest thing I have found lately is her with her mouth full of mud and a pebble in her hand and big smiles on her face. To beat that I have found her now three times with dirt in the mouth. Yuck! Today it rained. This has got to be the fifteenth day this month that it rained and my kids could not stand it. So eventually I told the kids to get their shoes (which makes Alice run to the door) and that we were going to IKEA. IKEA is a great way to spend the day. Daniel and Alice played in the kids rooms that were set up and ran through that little hole in the wall they have between two of the rooms. They loved it. One of the rooms had a slide in it which Alice discovered that she loved. Down the slide she went, over and over and over again. Then we came home and the crying and tantrums started up right away again. But for those two...

Marriages

I am combining the prompts from the 4th and 5th. They ask if you have marriage certificates and then stories about how the people met and later became married. I have found a few citations of marriage records but have seen very few, while I am grateful for the indexers who put the information out there I can't wait until they get around to attaching images. Although I guess I can always pay for the actual documents but who wants to do that? Regardless, this is one of my favorite stories. My grandma, LaVon Taysom, was the oldest of a lot of kids. When she was a teenager her parents sent her and two of her sisters to live with their grandparents (Hammers) in Pleasant View, UT. While there, they would attend the local dances and she eventually met Marshall Maycock. Now being proper, as they dated, her sisters went with them as chaperones. Eventually LaVon and Marshall decided to get married. She was only 17 so on their marriage certificate her birthday says 10 Jul 1908!! ...

Random

So the baby girl sure moves a lot. I remember being amazed when I was pregnant with Daniel, when they asked about fetal kicks and I thought, seriously there are babies who only kick 10 times in an hour? Those women are so lucky. I wanted to have Daniel as soon as possible mostly because I didn't think that my ribs would hold up from his abuse. I had a lot of people tell me that he would probably still be a calm baby anyway, that some babies are just active in the womb. Those people were dead wrong. Daniel has just been on the move since he was conceived apparently. The only thing I worried about with having two kids close together is that they would both be as active as Daniel. It looks as though we are well on our way to having two kids who can't sit still and have to be into everything and anything. By the way does anyone have any tips on how to convince Daniel that he doesn't have to stand on a chair and help mom in the kitchen every time I walk in there? I am ...
