Mormon Mommy Blogging

Usually I sit down to blog and can't think of anything to write about but today I have too much. Mostly today though I was reflecting, on this article called "Why I can't stop reading Mormon Mommy Blogs."

My friend posted this on facebook (thanks Erin!) and I thought it was really interesting. Here is the sum up. This woman who wrote the article describes herself as a "childless, overeducated atheist feminist," who reads at least five "mormon mommy blogs" every day. Then she describes about the blogs, how they are different than other mommy blogs, and why she thinks she likes to read them. She also stated that she is not the only one who reads these blogs, but had many friends who also loved the Mormon Mommy Blogs.

Then I started thinking about how grateful I am for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in my life. I love that our church teaches that families are not just important but essential to life and happiness. Jason read an article a few months ago that stated that people with kids were generally across the board, less happy than those with out. I wondered who they had talked to, because I think the saddest thing would be to grow old in this life without a family. I can't imagine not having kids (ok, really I can but only on really selfish days when I want to go back to school and finish my medieval studies!)

I love being a stay at home mom (although Jason would argue this point this week), and enjoy (mostly enjoy) doing things for and with my kids. Granted Daniel is in some kind of funk this week that makes me want to lock him in a cage and throw things at him, but I know that this too shall pass. The truth of it is, I enjoy baking, cooking, crafting and doing outrageous things with my kids. Cleaning....well that is the only place I ever feel that "molly mormon" guilt, of why is my house so dirty when everyone else has a clean house? I would say that we just play non-stop and I never get a chance to clean but as you can see it is the afternoon, my kids are resting and I am blogging, not doing dishes. Today I feel no guilt about that.

I am also really grateful for the Book of Mormon in my life. I am a better parent when I read it. It grants me patience, love, and I can more clearly hear that voice in my head saying "don't yell at Daniel." I know that Heavenly Father wants us to be the best we can, and He has given us the resources we need to become that best.

Anyway, that is my long lecture on why I love the gospel and how grateful I am to be a parent with the right resources to raise a righteous family. How's that for alliteration! To anyone who bothers to read this I hope you have a great day!

Amen! I love that these blogs make us want to be better; however, some are not as realistic as others. It's all about balance. Trying to be better without trying to make ourselves sound perfect all the time. I love your blog...and you! :) We need to have a play date soon!

Thanks Mel. I needed this today. I too am grateful for those little things that we tend to forget. Our faith get's us through! I am also grateful for blogging and the internet. It keeps me in-touch with great family that I wouldn't otherwise see very often. Love you guys!

Sunday School Lesson on The Revelation

I teach Gospel Doctrine, or basically a bible study class at my church. It is one of my favorite things to do. This week I went a little insane and ended up doing a lot of prep work and just wanted to share it. We always run out of time to study the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, because it comes at the end, and always around Christmas time and everyone does Christmas lessons instead. This year I decided to battle the beast (pun intended) and taught a crash course in Revelation in 35 minutes or less. Obviously I had way more than material than we got to go through. Half of these handouts came from BYU Studies website, which is an amazing source of information if you are looking at a deeper view of your scripture reading. Another help was the Ensign come follow me article this month by Nicholas Frederick. Handouts There's a lot more info that's in my class notes if you would like that as well. Class Notes

Whale Watching in San Francisco

My sister and her family came all the way from Idaho to visit us. Naturally we had to take them to the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a typical July day, foggy, freezing, windy and crowded. We battled people on bikes and with strollers and the wind to walk onto the bridge. We had just made it to the first tower when we noticed a whale watching tour boat and joked about how cool it would be if there was suddenly a whale that came out of the water. About ten seconds later, A WHALE CAME OUT OF THE WATER! It didn't ever do the complete National Geographic flip over or show it's tail, but there was a Humpback Whale feeding, and it kept coming up to eat. It was amazing. AMAZING. We spent almost 40 minutes watching the whale, possibly whales at the time. There was one in particular that came over, right below us the kids could all see it, and it was so close we could see the barnacles on the mouth, and it rolled and was putting on quite the show for us. It was an amazing sigh

Sewing Quilts with Daniel

Daniel is not one to sit still very often at all. My parents say that he is totally my son and that I drove my mom crazy too but frankly I can't remember that far back. There is one thing that Daniel loves to help me with, and that is sewing. He loves the machine and loves to sit in my lap as we sew anything. Sometimes I think about just sewing straight lines down my endless supply of fabric because I know he will sit still for awhile. A few months ago I had a good friend show me how to make rag quilts. The first one that Daniel and I sewed together was for my niece Abigale. Then of course I had to make one for my nephew Joshua. Then I decided to make one for Daniel. I was going to make a transportation one, full of trucks and planes and boats, but when I took him to the fabric store, much to my surprise and delight he chose dragons over the airplanes. So we started his quilt last week. He sat on my lap or next to me while we sewed every piece together. He was so excited
