Sewing Quilts with Daniel

Daniel is not one to sit still very often at all. My parents say that he is totally my son and that I drove my mom crazy too but frankly I can't remember that far back. There is one thing that Daniel loves to help me with, and that is sewing. He loves the machine and loves to sit in my lap as we sew anything. Sometimes I think about just sewing straight lines down my endless supply of fabric because I know he will sit still for awhile. A few months ago I had a good friend show me how to make rag quilts. The first one that Daniel and I sewed together was for my niece Abigale.

Then of course I had to make one for my nephew Joshua.

Then I decided to make one for Daniel. I was going to make a transportation one, full of trucks and planes and boats, but when I took him to the fabric store, much to my surprise and delight he chose dragons over the airplanes. So we started his quilt last week. He sat on my lap or next to me while we sewed every piece together. He was so excited when it was done and was really upset that it had to be washed before he could throw it in his crib.

Daniel thinks of most blankets like rugs.

I just loved the dragons on both of these fabrics.

I did this quilt a little different, I did the whole back blue. I think it turned out pretty awesome but Daniel cannot understand why I even turned it over.

This is him telling me that the dragons should come back.

I tried for a long time to get him to look at me and smile. I kept having him say things and finally when I told him to say "Anna" he looked at me and shouted it.

Daniel is showing me where some of the dragons are.

I used to sew and scrapbook and do all sorts of crafts and cooking before Daniel was born. I am just glad I finally found something we can do together without too much trouble.

Mel! I am SO impressed! I just got a sewing machine from my mother-in-law and I don't even know how to use it! What an amazing talent you have! That is so cute that he loves to sew with you. Sew away!

Rag quilts are about the only ones I can make. Although just looking at all of the ones you made made my hands start to cramp from all that clipping! LOL. They turned out great though. I love that Anna made him smile for the camera. We better still hang out even though I will be more than 200 ft away from you!

Ikea beat the rainy day

My kids love the dirt. They love being outside while I try to plant and do everything in the dirt. Alice rolls in, runs in, and eats the dirt. The grossest thing I have found lately is her with her mouth full of mud and a pebble in her hand and big smiles on her face. To beat that I have found her now three times with dirt in the mouth. Yuck! Today it rained. This has got to be the fifteenth day this month that it rained and my kids could not stand it. So eventually I told the kids to get their shoes (which makes Alice run to the door) and that we were going to IKEA. IKEA is a great way to spend the day. Daniel and Alice played in the kids rooms that were set up and ran through that little hole in the wall they have between two of the rooms. They loved it. One of the rooms had a slide in it which Alice discovered that she loved. Down the slide she went, over and over and over again. Then we came home and the crying and tantrums started up right away again. But for those two...

Marriages

I am combining the prompts from the 4th and 5th. They ask if you have marriage certificates and then stories about how the people met and later became married. I have found a few citations of marriage records but have seen very few, while I am grateful for the indexers who put the information out there I can't wait until they get around to attaching images. Although I guess I can always pay for the actual documents but who wants to do that? Regardless, this is one of my favorite stories. My grandma, LaVon Taysom, was the oldest of a lot of kids. When she was a teenager her parents sent her and two of her sisters to live with their grandparents (Hammers) in Pleasant View, UT. While there, they would attend the local dances and she eventually met Marshall Maycock. Now being proper, as they dated, her sisters went with them as chaperones. Eventually LaVon and Marshall decided to get married. She was only 17 so on their marriage certificate her birthday says 10 Jul 1908!! ...

Random

So the baby girl sure moves a lot. I remember being amazed when I was pregnant with Daniel, when they asked about fetal kicks and I thought, seriously there are babies who only kick 10 times in an hour? Those women are so lucky. I wanted to have Daniel as soon as possible mostly because I didn't think that my ribs would hold up from his abuse. I had a lot of people tell me that he would probably still be a calm baby anyway, that some babies are just active in the womb. Those people were dead wrong. Daniel has just been on the move since he was conceived apparently. The only thing I worried about with having two kids close together is that they would both be as active as Daniel. It looks as though we are well on our way to having two kids who can't sit still and have to be into everything and anything. By the way does anyone have any tips on how to convince Daniel that he doesn't have to stand on a chair and help mom in the kitchen every time I walk in there? I am ...
